May to Carlton? Why Maher would like to see it happen

Andy Maher thinks Carlton should go after Melbourne defender Steven May this off-season.

According to SEN's Tom Morris, the 33-year-old has been told by the Demons to look for a new home despite having a year to run on his contract, and Maher has urged the Blues to pounce.

While May is far closer to the end than the start of his career, Maher thinks that the Blues could get two good seasons out of the two-time All-Australian who has played at least 16 games in each of the last six years.

“I am (keen on him), you want to be a better team next year, whoever you are and however that happens,” Maher said on SEN The Run Home.

“I think you get two years out of Steven May. He's been pretty sound.

“I reckon Steven May's the sort of bloke that would recommit as hard as he possibly can to a new opportunity.

“We know that he's had some issues with some teammates at Melbourne over the journey, and he's had some problems away from footy.

“I can see him making Carlton a better team, and I can see him making a lot of teams better.”

While Carlton already have a star key defender in Jacob Weitering, Maher thinks that the duo could form a great pairing with May able to free up the key Blue to rebound off half-back and intercept mark.

“Jacob Weitering has been that last line and the big anchor of your defence,” Maher said.

“He has taken on that role at Carlton because he kind of has to, but two or three years ago, he was as good a field kick that Carlton had.

“Now he's sort of sacrificed that a little bit to become uber defensive and be the kind of anchor of their defence.

“If Steven May does that job, and you train Weitering this off-season to maybe drop a few kilos, get a bit more mobile, and return to that rebounding, ball-using defender that you were.

“With all due respect to Jack Silvagni, I think he's an upgrade on Silvagni still as a player, marginally superior.

“Weitering goes from full back in the old to centre half back where Silvagni used to be, and you just drag May back to where Weitering used to be.

“I can see it working.”

SEN’s David King thinks that another Victorian club should be chasing May as well.
