Following Carlton’s dire loss to Collingwood, conversations have continued surrounding the future of the Blues’ list.
With a clear lack of depth, the side – bereft of confidence – have now fallen to a measly 6-10 record, 11th on the ladder with the potential to fall further following the remaining Round 17 fixtures.
While incoming CEO Graham Wright appears certain to make significant change come off-season, alterations may need to be made as soon as possible for the Blues to maximise their return within the backend of 2025.
One of those changes circulating surrounds the already questioned future of star ruckman Tom De Koning.
Despite his incredible start to the season, De Koning’s recent form has seen somewhat of a slump, coinciding with the growing rumours suggesting the ruckman will leave the Blues for St Kilda at season’s end.
With a $1.7m contract tabled by the Saints, De Koning’s decision may already be made, and in the view of SEN’s Kane Cornes, it may spark a rather difficult conversation within the walls of IKON Park.
“There was a ground ball on the boundary line in the first quarter and he didn’t go for it,” Cornes told SEN Crunch Time.
“This is Tom De Koning, who is their heart and soul, I think. He’s aggressive and tough, and some games this year where he’s gone ‘just get on my back boys, we’re going’ when they’ve been at their best.
“He didn’t go for a ground ball. He just didn’t go for it. He looks to have… checked out might be too strong of a word but he just looks affected by this significantly.
“What’s the benefit now of playing him if he’s going to be in that mood? He can only do damage to himself and be a less desirable asset if he had a significant injury.
“That discussion needs to happen. I think it would be extreme to say, ‘you’re out for the next seven games’, and not play.
“It’s extreme and it’s rare, but it’s the conversation that needs to be had.”
Within Friday night’s contest with Collingwood, De Koning only managed 11 disposals and 12 hitouts, splitting ruck duties with Mark Pittonet during the 56-point loss.
