The Chris Waller stable has announced the sad passing of Riff Rocket.

The star four-year-old gelding passed away after complications which arose from his recent colic surgery.

Riff Rocket won three Group 1 races in his 12-start career - the 2023 Victoria Derby (2500m) plus the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and ATC Derby (2400m) both in 2024.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Riff Rocket, following complications arising from his colic surgery,” read the Waller statement.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved, as we mourn the loss of not just a magnificent racehorse, but also an extraordinary animal who made an indelible impact on Australian racing.

“A week ago, Riff Rocket underwent surgery to address a complication with his bowel. While his initial recovery appeared promising, the complexities often associated with such surgeries persisted.

“Our thoughts go out to all those who had the privilege of working with and supporting Riff Rocket throughout his career. He will be deeply missed, but this legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
