SENTrack: Wednesday best bets at Devonport (11/09)

The first of four consecutive thoroughbred meetings on the synthetic in Devonport is this Wednesday with 10 races scheduled.

A couple of races that were moved across following the abandonment of the last three races in Hobart 10 days ago have boosted the program.

The first of the day is set for 11:38.

Best bet: Race 6, No. 1 - Durazzo

Durazzo resumes with a spruik and high hopes for a big campaign. He was short in the market on debut on Launceston Cup Day, but things went wrong from a poor draw before he atoned with a dominant victory prior to a spell. His recent trial was excellent in the fastest time of the day, and while I expect him to be very well found in betting, he looks a standout.

Next best: Race 2, No. 12 - Magnaprime

Magnaprime was heavily supported at his first start in Launceston a few weeks ago, and he looked like the winner before having his pocket picked by one who snuck up the inside rail. A return to his home track should only be positive, and he draws ideally to be up near the speed without doing too much work. The 3YO was a $60,000 purchase that can recoup a good chunk of that outlay by winning this Tasbred bonus maiden.

Best value: Race 8, No. 2 - Lord Whitegate

I think we see an improved Lord Whitegate here, third-up, stepping out to a suitable distance. His two runs this time in look to have been for fitness, settling well back over 1150m and 1220m. The 7YO has a poor record early in his campaign but hasn’t missed the quinella in two starts over the Devonport 1350m. Without much speed in the race on paper, I hope for some early intent from Anthony Darmanin to put Lord Whitegate into the race, and from there, I think he’ll run a race at each-way odds.
