“It’s often an afterthought this race”: The Group 1 Another Wil should target this spring

Cam Luke believes connections of Another Wil should target their star galloper towards the Champions Stakes on the final of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

Raced over 2000m, Cam Luke believes the last start winner would be perfectly suited over the Flemington track and distance.

With connections expressing their desire to target the Toorak Handicap on October 12, Cam Luke believes a fourth-up run in the Champions Stakes would be a perfect race to target at peak fitness.

“I like what connections are doing with this horse this spring,” Luke told SENTrack.

“Go to the Testa Rossa next start where he’ll tick that off, he’ll then go to the Toorak Handicap and win that and the thought is that he might go to the Cox Plate and I’m not saying that’s a bad move because if you’ve got a horse that is in form and it’s a Cox Plate, absolutely!

“I think the Champions Stakes at Flemington to end the Cup Carnival, I’m not going to say the race is at his mercy but I’m going to say 2000m at Flemington is perfect at this point in that horses career.

“That’s a good race, a very good race and I think he’s going to be better off there. I know he’s a lightly raced horse but I think Flemington over the 2000m is perfect.

“It’s often an afterthought this race.”

Another Wil is the current $3.50 favourite for the Toorak and a $13 chance in the Champions Stakes.
