The Cox Plate field for 2025 has been finalised.

The barrier draw took place at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Tuesday morning with favourite and defending champ Via Sistina drawing gate 5.

Via Sistina - one of three Chris Waller horses in this year's race - is looking to go back-to-back at The Valley in the 2040m Group 1, and is currently the short-priced favourite with Sportsbet.

Waller's other two are Aeliana and Buckaroo and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman and Ben Melham respectively.

Ciaron Maher's Light Infantry Man, Antino for Tony Gollan, Mitch Freedman's Attrition, Globe for Price & Kent Jnr (since scratched), Yulong's emerging mare Treasurethe Moment and three-year-old Nepotism for Team Hawkes are also in this year's Cox Plate.

The Moonee Valley Racecourse will close for renovations following the running of the 2025 Cox Plate.

Why is Moonee Valley shutting down?

The $220 million Moonee Valley redevelopment project will involve demolishing the old grandstands, which will be replaced by over 1,000 new homes.

Along with the homes, commercial spaces, retail stores and a hotel will be built.

Additionally, the track itself will be rebuilt with a modernised grandstand.

The Valley has purposely made the 2025 Cox Plate take place on the last race (race 10) on Saturday, October 25, before the venue indefinitely closes.

While there is no specific time as to when the racecourse will re-open, it will be closed for at least 18 months.

The 2026 Cox Plate will be run at Flemington. It will be the first time ever that the Group 1 will be run at a venue which is not Moonee Valley.
