Cam Green has been ruled out of Australia’s three-match ODI series against India after suffering minor side soreness.

Green’s absence from the series has been labelled precautionary after his injury was deemed low-grade.

With the Ashes five weeks away, and captain Pat Cummins already racing the clock to be fit for the series against England, Cricket Australia deemed Green’s injury too risky to play through the India ODI series.

"Green will complete a short period of rehabilitation and is tracking to return to play in round three of the Sheffield Shield to continue his preparation for the Ashes," Cricket Australia said in a statement this morning.

Marnus Labuschagne returns to the Australian ODI side in place of Green after four hundreds in his last five innings.

It’s a large vote of confidence in the batsman ahead of the Ashes, with Labuschagne the favourite to return to the Australian batting line-up.

SEN's Adam White explained the key worries around Cameron Green's injury is the impact on his bowling through the Ashes.

"The issue for this is not so much that that would affect his batting, it's more the fact that it's going to potentially affect his ability to bowl," White said on SEN.

"So that creates all sorts of issues for selectors now because it was probably looking that they were only going to play one all-rounder in the top six, which meant that it would have been Green and probably (Beau) Webster would have missed out.

"But if Green can't bowl, or if the selectors or the captain can't be confident that Green can bowl a minimum of sort of 12 to 15 overs an innings... then all of a sudden it goes back to Green only being selected as a batter, and then Webster comes back into the frame a lot more significantly.

"With what Weatherald was doing, maybe we'd be looking at Weatherald and Labuschagne coming in but if Green can't bowl, there's only a spot for one of Weatherald and Labuschagne as it stands.

"That's not the news they would have wanted, considering the significant injury that he's coming back from.

"Even though it's different, it's still going to potentially affect him from bowling."

SEN will have live coverage of the ODIs from this Sunday.
