Brandon Smith has been released on bail with his court hearing over drug and gambling charges adjourned until October 9.

The Rabbitohs star, who was flanked by security when he arrives at Southport Magistrates Court this morning, did not speak nor enter a plea.

The 29-year-old was charged by Queensland police with one count of supplying dangerous drugs and one count of using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting.

Queensland police allege Smith contacted a drug dealer on the Sunshine Coast in order to supply an illicit drug to Victor Radley and other Roosters teammates on June 7.

Radley has not been charged and there is no evidence to suggest he obtained or took illicit drugs, but a series of damning text messages allegedly sent between the pair have put his future at the Roosters in doubt.

Smith's lawyer confirmed he will plead not guilty.

After a brief hearing, Smith was granted bail with one strict condition - that he is not to contact the drug dealer or Radley.

"We didn't heard many details other than the fact they would be pleading not guilty," Channel 10 court reporter Matt Johnston told SEN's Matt White.

"There are two people he is not allowed to contact, one is a person whose name we have not heard but we believe he is linked to the drug charges. The other is Victor Radley, who we have heard is also allegedly linked to that charge although he has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

"Brandon Smith cannot contact them while he is on bail.

"After court Smith had to go and sign some bail paperwork so he can leave the watchhouse.

"When he came out of court he made a beeline straight through the media pack. He dove into a car that pulled up right outside. he made a pretty speedy get away."

10:09am UPDATE

News from court is Smith has been granted bail on the one condition that he can't talk to Victor Radley or the alleged drug dealer.

The case has been adjourned for three weeks until October 9.

He will plead not guilty to both charges.
