Toby Sexton appears likely to make his first start at the NRL level since Round 19 in the Bulldogs’ semi-final clash against the Panthers at the halfback position, according to Kurt Mann.
This follows his performance from the Qualifying Final against the Melbourne Storm from the bench, which was his first NRL game since that clash against the Cowboys.
Coming on earlier than expected with captain Stephen Crichton being injured, Sexton was impressive in his return to the level, playing 61 minutes.
In his first touch of the game, Sexton scored under the sticks to see the Bulldogs tie the game up.
After that, Sexton continued to perform well, providing an extra dimension to the Bulldogs' attack despite the side losing 26-18.
And with Crichton set to be out for at least the next two weeks, it opens up the possibility of Sexton making his first start since Round 19 with a potential reshuffling of the spine.
Speaking on SEN 1170’s Mornings, the Queensland utility player is under the impression that the 24-year-old will start in the halves and is looking forward to the stability that he brings. “Everyone has seen him start the year, and he started really well,” Mann said.
“I was really happy for him to get on and score with his first touch, and I thought Toby being on the field, he definitely offers a lot of stability with him on there.
“He’s a great communicator; he leads the boys around the field.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll probably start at seven this week. I don’t really know what’s happening yet with the team, but if he does, I’m pretty sure he will do a good job.”
The Bulldogs will host the Panthers at Accor Stadium in the Sunday afternoon slot, with teams set to be announced on Tuesday.
The winner of this clash will take on the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in a Grand Final Qualifier.
