North Melbourne's star ruckman Tristan Xerri has been handed down a significant ban following his careless hit on Demon Tom Sparrow.

The MRO have concluded that Xerri’s flailing arm was careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, equating to a three-match ban for the star ruckman.

Following a ruck battle in North’s forward 50 at the MCG on Sunday, the ball found its way into the arms of the oncoming Sparrow. In an attempt to make contact with the ball and/or player, Xerri flung an arm in which took Sparrow high, immediately knocking out the Demon.

The North Melbourne Football Club released this statement regarding the incident:

"North Melbourne ruckman Tristan Xerri has been handed a three-match suspension for the incident during Sunday's Round 18 match against Melbourne that left midfielder Tom Sparrow unconscious.

"Xerri has been charged with striking after his left arm made contact with Sparrow’s head during a fourth-quarter contest.

"The Match Review Officer charged Xerri with striking, grading the incident as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

"The incident resulted in Sparrow being taken from the field on a stretcher.

"The club has until Tuesday morning to decide whether to appeal the suspension."
