Trade season is approaching and here’s a taste of what’s to come later in the year.
SEN regular and Channel 9 journalist Tom Morris was joined by AFL Media’s Cal Twomey with the pair providing the latest on a massive number of players being spoken about in trade circles.
Read their mega trade update on 18 players below:
Twomey: “I think the call is leaning towards St Kilda unless there’s a back flip. That’s my sense of this situation.
“It is a significant difference (in money). The $1.1m over seven years would make it the biggest deal ever for a ruckman. And that’s been trumped by another $600,000 a year.
“It’s pretty amazing.”
Twomey: “I think he’s such a favourite son that he would be the one that would be really difficult to let go, as well as Patrick Cripps as a dual Brownlow Medallist and superstar.”
Twomey: “Walsh is a bit different in that he’s a love player, but he’s only got one year left on his contract.
“So if there’s already concern or worry about what he does beyond the end of next year, could the conversation happen this year to fast-track that? I don’t know.
“There’s clubs trying to get into that conversation already. They’re in the position where if you’re Graham Wright you can make some reasonably unemotional decisions around the whole footy club.”
Are the Pies any closer to signing Cameron?
Twomey: “Short answer - no.
“I think that’s still trickling along. He’s underpaid for what he is. He’s got next year to go on his deal.
“He’s worth more, there’s offers and interest out there for him at a higher level than what Collingwood’s paying him.
“As yet I don’t think any extension is on the cards any time soon.
“He probably deserves to be on more (money).”
Morris: “Is he any chance to be traded or will clubs for him?”
Twomey: “It’s been an awful run for him for three years.
“That’s the biggest challenge and priority. If you’re another club you’d want to be aware of what that is.
“He’s been pretty loyal to Essendon across time and even through his free agency period and the drawn out contract negotiations, he wanted to stay the whole time.
“Ideally he’d want to stay.”
Twomey: “I think the Magpies are going to go hard. They won’t be the only ones.
“In the past he’s not gone too deep into years without a deal. The summer period will be the time where I think Gold Coast will be trying to lock him in for the long term.”
Morris: “He’s got another year to go on his contact and his value is rising steadily by the week.
“Are the Giants trying to extend him? How hard will clubs come for him.”
Twomey: “I don’t think clubs are banging down the door yet.
“The Giants didn’t let Xavier O’Halloran and Wade Derksen go last year, so there’s absolutely no chance that even if they banged down the door and gave them three first-round picks that they’d move Aaron Cadman.
“But the Giants have traditionally moved on their contracts early. I think that would be a discussion that happens this year.”
Morris: “I reckon Cadman’s next contract will be four years to take him to free agency, and it’s probably $1 million a year.
“That’s the market for key forwards, especially in their early to mid 20s.”
Twomey: “The Cats and Bulldogs will show interest, but I hope he stays at GWS.”
Morris: “The Hawks aren’t desperate to keep him but they’ve offered him deals. Some other clubs are keen on him as well.”
Twomey: “He’s a good player and valuable to what the Hawks are doing.”
Twomey: “He’s taking his time with his call. The view at the start of the year was it was likely to get done and then the hammering (injury) delayed that a little bit.
“Until you sign you’re not signed. But there’s still pretty strong confidence that he stays.
“Again you have to sign on the dotted line and he’s been weighing through that.”
Morris: “Clubs are on watch with Jake Lever, they know he’s been frustrated, they know he was angry to be dropped.
“I think it’s one that clubs will ask then question of at the end of the year - is Jake Lever worth getting?”
Morris: “My firm view is if Oliver was on $800,000 a year, then it would be pretty easy to move him on at the end of the year.
“The money is stopping him from going. It’s nothing to do with the club, I think he’d just like a fresh environment.
“But which club would be willing to take on that big salary?”
Twomey: “I think it will be a talking point definitely at the end of the season.
“It probably requires then player to take a little bit of a haircut.”
Morris: “Do you think he stays next year?”
Twomey: “Yes.”
Twomey: “I honestly think he’s weighing up all three options - the three being stay (at St Kilda), go to Port or Adelaide.
“Port doesn’t have the picks as easily. Adelaide has the picks and the cash, St Kilda has him. Holding rights are big in footy.
“I think if he stays it will be shorter term.”
Morris: “The Cats are keen on Rowan Marshall.
“The first step is that Marshall needs to be keen on the Cats. We don’t know whether that’s the case yet, we’ll find out at the end of the year if and when Tom De Koning comes.
“There’s little doubt in my mind that the Cats would express interest. If they are interested, what they’re willing to give up is another stumbling block.
“There’s still a few hoops to jump through here.”
Twomey: “People think we have an obsession talking about Reid’s contract - the reality is, until he re-signs this is going to be a discussion point.
“He’s getting offers bigger than anything in history, so if we’re not talking about those offers we’re not talking about anything in this part of the game.
“The Eagles have offered him three mega deals, he hasn’t signed them yet, they’ve been on the table for 13 weeks.
“The more likely option is he probably leans towards staying for next year, it’s a bit easier right now.”
Twomey: “I think he stays, but where is his contract?”
Morris: “The cynical side of me says ‘what are they doing?’.
“But surely he stays.”
Twomey: “Surely, we’re all of that view. 17 clubs have called and got told don’t go here.”
Morris: “I think the Sydney Swans are still very much in the mix for Jamarra.
“They’re looking for a key forward. A lot of this depends on his state of mind, how he’s feeling, and if he believes he can move outside Victoria.”
Twomey: “It’s one we’ll keep following. The Swans are clearly in the market for a key forward.
“If I was going to call it at the moment thats where I’ll be looking, but still a bit to go.
“The contract status adds some complexity given he’s on a very good deal for next year.”
