Why Mooney thinks De Goey’s Doha trip is a no-brainer for Collingwood

Collingwood superstar Jordan De Goey is headed to Doha for a 10-day groin strengthening program according to The Age’s Jake Niall.

De Goey battled a nightmare soft tissue run in 2024, suffering a high-grade hamstring injury to go with a debilitating groin/abdominal issue that saw him play just 13 of 23 possible games.

According to the report, the 28-year-old will travel to the world-renowned Aspetar clinic with Magpies high-performance boss Jarrod Wade where he’ll work on getting his body right, the same clinic that both Richmond’s Josh Gibcus and Hawthorn’s Changkouth Jiath attended last season.

SEN’s Sam Edmund and Cameron Mooney discussed what De Goey can expect in Qatar and the three-time premiership forward expects the trip to be highly worthwhile for the 2023 premiership star.

Edmund: “Jordan De Goey, I wonder if this is smart.”

Mooney: “This is very smart.”

Edmund: “He’s had all sorts of groin and abdominal injuries which meant that he was a faded force this year, unfortunately. He carried it right throughout the season even when he was out there playing.

“He and Jarrod Wade the high-performance coach at Collingwood have headed over to Doha, this is the Aspetar clinic over there that all the athletes are going to now to prepare his groin and abdominal areas for the 2025 pre-season.”

Mooney: “It’s a smart move. Does Collingwood push for a premiership if Jordan De Goey is not playing? I don’t think they do. So this is a great move.

“Do anything you can to get Jordan De Goey fully fit if you're Collingwood.”

Edmund: “How much can you take away from just 10 days?”

Mooney: “It’s learning techniques, methods, and programs for the next 12 months.”

Edmund: “So not so much treatment?”

Mooney: “It will be treatment as well, they will go through it and check everything out and say,  ‘Right this is what you should do and what not to do … take that program back with you’.

“10 days will be fantastic to get a professional in that area to go over the body and tell you what you need to do.”

De Goey will return to the club on the 25th of November, the same date when all of his teammates are due back for pre-season training.
