The biggest issue plaguing Brisbane’s future

The Brisbane Broncos have officially wrapped up their 2024 season with an embarrassing 50-12 loss to the Melbourne Storm.

The result is a far cry from the club’s showing in 2023, where Kevvie Walter’s side was famously 17 minutes away from winning the Grand Final.

12 months after the fact Brisbane is now treading close to a crisis as the famous club looks ahead to a crucial offseason review.

With plenty of criticism being thrown around at the club’s players and staff, one faction of the club that hasn’t been held accountable is the Brisbane Broncos Old Boys, with The Sydney Morning Herald’s Adrian Proszenko believing some of the problems have to be accounted to them.

“Right or wrong, for instance Anthony Seibold didn’t engage with them when he was up there and they turned on him, they were all pushing for Kevvie.

“He was being undermined at the time when you probably needed them to come on the journey with him because he was trying to effect some change.

“There were comments about potentially a Michael Maguire coming up, well straight away Gordy Tallis is going to oppose it, he’s one of the really vocal guys and he’s in a stoush with him.

“Those guys (the old boys) have to do what’s best for the club not look for a job for their mates.”

Former Parramatta Eels captain Tim Mannah revealed his scepticism in Kevvie Walter’s and his disappointment in the old boys turning on the current crop of players.

“I think a new coach is going to be on the cards regardless,” Mannah added.

“There’s a lot of people defending him at the moment but the reality is last year they had a go year, prior to that they weren’t that good and this year they weren’t great.

“I have nothing against him but when I watch him in press conferences I also wonder if he knows why they won or why they lost, sometimes he comes across as enjoying the ride and not really knowing the causes either way.

“I didn’t like how Gordy turned it (the issues) on Adam Reynolds, you can tell there’s an agenda there when the old boys start protecting the coach by hammering the players.

“They’ve got a lot of issues there but I think they just need to have some honest conversations there and figure out exactly what’s going on.

“They can fix it, it’s not a club that is impossible to fix, the playing squad there is the envy of a lot of clubs in the competition, they just need to have some honest conversations.”
