The 4 certainties for Brisbane versus Carlton

By SEN

Back for another year, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the Elimination Final between Brisbane versus Carlton.

Brisbane

Daniher 2+ goals

Joe Daniher hasn’t had his most accurate season in front of the big sticks, kicking a wayward 44 behinds, along with 50 goals.

While he hasn't been overly accurate, the tall is averaging 2.2 goals this season and has kicked 2+ goals in 12 of his last 14 appearances.

Even if the athletic forward doesn't put his accuracy woes to the side this weekend, he should still kick at least two goals ... particularly after last year's finals efforts.

Zorko 20+ disposals

Dayne Zorko has had an incredible season off half-back and earned himself his second All-Australian blazer in the process.

On top of his ball use, the veteran is averaging a career high 26 disposals this year in his 13th season.

Zorko has also recorded 25+ disposals in his last seven matches at the Gabba and has only gone under 20 disposals four times this season.

Expect these trends to continue and Zorko to collect at least 20 disposals as Brisbane's big finals campaign begins at the Gabba against the Blues.

Carlton

Walsh 30+ Disposals

This might be the most certain of certainties entering the first week of finals.

2023 Gary Ayres Medallist, 29 and six tackles in last years’ elimination, 34 and eight tackles in their semi-final, followed by another 33 and six tackles in the prelim against the Lions.

If there was ever a time for Sam Walsh to perform at his best, it’s now, with the Blues heavily predicted to fall well short against a strong Brisbane side.

Another 32 in Carlton’s heartbreaker against the Saints in the final round, and with their backs against the wall once again, it’s hard to see Walsh falter.

Consider the former number one pick a must-watch on Saturday night.

Newman 25+ Disposals

Nic Newman has been extraordinarily important for the undermanned Blues throughout 2024.

Playing nearly every contest this year, Newman has pieced together performance after performance across the back half, averaging a strong 23.6 disposals a game to go with eight marks and 17 kicks.

Off the back of a phenomenal 35-disposal, 16-mark game against the Saints, expect Newman to play a strong role in what is expected to be a Carlton back half under the pump.
