After the Blackcaps' early exit from the T20 World Cup, white-ball captain Kane Williamson has announced that he is forgoing his captaincy and central contract with New Zealand Cricket.

The 33-year-old veteran has played over 350 first-class matches for the national side and wants to find a better balance between his family life and his relentless playing schedule.

Williamson says that even though he is opting out of selection for the 2024-25 season, representing New Zealand is a priority and his decision isn’t a sign of him losing interest in playing international cricket.

“Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished,” said Williamson.

“My life outside cricket has changed however - spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me.”

Williamson is scheduled to only miss a small number of international cricket matches in New Zealand this coming summer. He will still being available for the eight World Test Championship matches before Christmas and the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan set for February and March.

NZ Cricket CEO Scott Weenink says that Williamson has earned the right to be able to take some time away from international cricket duties and concentrate on family and other ventures.

“This is a good way to help keep Kane in the international game so that he continues to play a major role for the Blackcaps – both now and in the years to come,” Weenink said.

“We have very little international cricket in New Zealand through January and outside that period he’s still available for the Blackcaps.

“NZC has a strong preference to select centrally contracted players for the Blackcaps, however, we’re happy to make an exception for our greatest-ever batter – especially as he remains so committed to the team.

“I know it sounds a bit counterintuitive, but I’m very encouraged by this development.”

Along with Williamson, pace bowler Lockie Ferguson also declined his central contract offer to represent New Zealand this summer.

The final list of contracted players will be announced in July.
